Train the Facilitator -

Accelerated Learning

ACCELERATED LEARNING FOR TRAINERS AND LEARNING DESIGNERS

19-22 July 2004, Shell EP Learning Centre, Noordwijkerhout

Cost: $2000 per person

Prerequisite: a traditional train the trainer workshop covering the basics of presentation skills

This workshop is for those who have the basics of facilitation but would like to enhance their facilitation/presentation skills AND to understand more about current brain research and why/how that can be applied to better learning. The workshop will provide:

1. Information about HOW a facilitator can build a more brain-engaging environment in order to stimulate and engage the learners, and

2. An opportunity to experience and experiment with some new techniques for creating active learning sessions.

Amongst the distinctive elements of Accelerated Learning are:

§ Making maximum use of all of the natural learning abilities we possess, in a structured and flexible way.

§ Using methods developed from brain research to facilitate learning, allowing learners to use more of their abilities and develop underused learning skills.

§ Communicating and learning on several different levels at once, maximizing the impact for both the learner and the organization.

§ Using the idea of Multiple Intelligences and variety to allow all to learn effectively, whatever their individual preferences and skills.

§ Maintaining a total focus on the learners' ability to apply new learning in real situations

The AL Train the Facilitator Workshop is built to awaken one's understanding of WHY the brain reacts to some stimuli better than others, WHAT the brain requires to spark interest and motivation, and HOW to build a diverse program that meets the immense variety of ways that people learn. In an interactive format, each participant will have time to determine just how to apply that "brain knowledge" and the AL methodology to their subject and their audience.

What is Methodology and why is it called Accelerated Learning:

Accelerated Learning (AL) is a design technology that was developed by a Bulgarian Psychologist, Georgi Lozanov in the 1970's. In Europe it was originally called Suggestopedia then later changed to Accelerated Learning in the US. Lozanov's research was based on languages and how to make it easy and fast to take in new information but more importantly how to shorten the learning curve (the time between the exposure to the content and the actual application) and to improve the retention rate from less than 5-15% to as much as 65-80%. The philosophy is well researched and has been proven over many years. For the past 15+ years, educators have been applying AL to areas such as physics, math, accounting, engineering, IT training, business and leadership courses in all kinds of delivery mechanisms even e-learning. AL is currently used in schools and corporations (Siemens, BMW, etc.) across the UK and in Europe.

Designers and Facilitators of the AL Train-the-Facilitator Workshop:

Mary White Kennedy and Michael Killingsworth and Sylvia Clements, three international leaders in AL technology, will present this specially designed four-day program for EP Learning. Packed with important fundamentals and ready-to-use ideas, it offers you a distillation of the many aspects of AL discovered and proven over the past 30 years. You will have the chance to apply the ideas to a piece of your own real work during the event, so this is a great chance to design or revise a piece of training as well as enhance your own skills and knowledge and a designer and facilitator.

At the completion of the workshop, you will be able to:

§ Explain more about your brain, how you use it and how to make the most of it

§ Apply the Accelerated Learning cycle to your own work

§ Apply AL to a work project of your own - a real piece of work you are designing or delivering

§ Create significant emotional experiences (SEEs) that promote long term storage/memory.

§ Build content and activations in all three modalities, Auditory, Visual and Kinesthetic

§ Engage a variety of senses and intelligencies that stimulate engagement and long term storage/memory

§ Explain different learning strategies and types of intelligence and how to appeal to everyone's preferences

§ Teach three things at once

§ Design, use, and explain memory aids to ensure new learning reaches long term memory

§ Generate positive environment that for maintaining learners' interest, energy and self esteem

§ Establish a positive environment that keeps not only your own energy, confidence and enthusiasm high but also for your students

  • Design and use of music and how it can enhance your courses
